Stella Margaret (Mermagen) Harrison

Mrs. Stella Harrison, wife of the late Earl Harrison, passed away at the Sunset Haven on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at the age of 93.

A public graveside service was held at the Carnduff Cemetery on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Lunch followed at the Friendship Centre.

Stella was predeceased by her husband Earl Harrison (2000), her mother Marquerita Mermagen (nee) Saw (1987), her father Herbert Mermagen (1943), her sister Rosalind Mermagen (1983), her brother-in-law Allan Harrison (1975), brother-in-law Martin Harrison (2004), sister-in-law Ruby Harrison (nee) Goldsmith (2003).

Left to mourn in England is her niece Frances Mary Ann Skinner (nee) Mermagen and family, two sisters-in-law Donna Shillington (nee) Harrison and Joy Fauth (nee) Harrison (nee) Gordon, and in Canada many nieces and nephews.

Stella was born in Surrey, England on September 20, 1924. As a child, she was good in all sports, especially tennis, cricket and field hockey. A little later she became an ardent square dancer and folk dancer and continued with this for many years even when living in Canada.

On April 30th, 1956 and on her own, she travelled on the SS Homeric, emigrating to Canada arriving in Winnipeg on May 8th. She worked in Winnipeg at the Canadian Bank of Commerce as a stenographer until April 1965 when she left to marry Earl Harrison on May 29, 1965 at the Unitarian Church in Winnipeg.

They moved to Carnduff Saskatchewan where Earl‘s family lived. After putting in months of effort, in May 1968 they hosted their open house on Jesse and Oscar’s (Earl’s parents) property for their business called “The Garden Centre”. They developed this business over the years hiring many people from the town until finally closing in the year 2002. Also during this time, Stella became the secretary of the Saskatchewan Nursery Trades Association (SNTA) and she often travelled to Regina or Saskatoon for their meetings. She worked with the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society for many years and occasionally was involved with the Seniors Centre.

For many winters, Stella’s time and effort was taken up with making the garden catalog, researching hardiness zone’s, printing the catalogue and then collating and stapling it together. The first catalogue came out in 1969 and the last one in 2000.

In December of 2001 Stella moved into the lovely new Millennium Estates Condos and continued enjoying her gardening there at a smaller scale.

Over the years, Stella was grateful for the help of Betty Henger, Bev LaBatte, Dolores Cameron, Penny Carnduff, Debbie Stevenson, Virginia Haswell, Roy Spencer and Charlie Spencer.
