Benny Walter Luhr Obituary

On the morning of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, around breakfast time, at the Redvers Health Centre (Long-Term Care) in Redvers, SK, Benny Walter Luhr of Willmar, Saskatchewan finally received the call he had eagerly been waiting for. He took the hand God offered him and left this earthly world to go to his eternal home to be with the Lord, at the age of 89, just two days short of his 90th birthday.

Benny was born on May 28, 1936, in Arcola, Saskatchewan, the 3rd son and child of August & Lydia Luhr. He was a bachelor his whole life. He would tell a story of a lady who lived by herself and people would ask her, "Are you not lonely?" And she would reply, "No, I have my Jesus." Many would maybe think the same of Benny, as he also had his Jesus. If you would ask anyone that knows Benny, "What do you think of when you hear his name?" all would say he had a great love for God, for farming and fishing.

Benny lived his whole life on the family farm where he was raised near Willmar, SK, except for the last 10 months when Long-Term Care in Redvers became his home, as his mind was starting to fail him. This farm has been in the family since 1903. Benny went to school until grade 8, in Willmar. He then quit school and farmed. He was a grain farmer and had cattle for many years, but mostly just feeder cattle in the later years before he gave the cattle up. He farmed with his brothers Henry and Raymond and then eventually farmed on his own. Benny shared the farm site with Raymond until Raymond's passing in 2015. Even though Raymond had moved to Estevan, he still frequented the farm on a regular basis.  Benny sowed his last crops in 2018 at the age of 82. Henry helped him take off his last crop. They worked until midnight that night to get it off so he would be all finished. What a special milestone to be able to finish your farming career with your brother, just the two of you, with whom you first started farming, while both in their 80's.

Benny was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Wordsworth, SK, near Willmar. He had attended this church since he was a child. Benny held the position of Secretary and was still currently the Secretary. Once the congregation became smaller and the regular church services became not as often, he then frequented other Lutheran churches in the area such as Oxbow or Frobisher.  He eventually settled on a church and became a regular church goer at the Carlyle Full Gospel Church, attending the Wednesday night Bible Studies and the Sunday morning service. Benny had a deep love for his Lord and made sure others knew about the Lord. Benny donated a tremendous amount of Bibles between Bible Camps, organizations and just about anyone he would meet. He would always have cases in his vehicle just to hand out when he saw the need. He signed every one on the inside, "Given in love"  1 Corinthians Chapter 13. Benny frequented many care homes in the area going as far as Moosomin or Fillmore to deliver Portal of Prayers for many years and to visit with the residents. Even in the last year when he was sick, his greatest worry was making sure that his Portal of Prayers were getting delivered.

Benny also enjoyed curling in his earlier years. He curled for quite a while with his brothers Henry and Raymond and a neighbour, winning fairly often. He had not actually curled on the ice for quite a few years, but had become a great "arm chair" curler, calling the shots or mostly disagreeing with them. He made sure to watch all of the events. Even this year, family made sure to write down the times of all the events for him so he knew what time to turn the television on.

The one last thing Benny was really known for was his love of fishing. He loved it so much that he built his own dugout on the farm for fishing. It took him years and many hours to get it to the size he wanted. He spent countless hours in his boat fishing for the perch he had in there. Several hours were spent out there with friends and neighbours making memories. Benny was not a traveler and the only trips he went on were fishing trips. He went to Deschambault Lake and quite often to Otter Lake with Raymond and Henry and fishing with Lawrence Pachiorka.

Benny was not the type of person to have coffee buddies or golfing buddies, but he was known by so many people. He loved his farm and never wandered far from there. The last year was extremely difficult for him not to be there and to be able to fish. The first thing Benny probably said when he got to heaven the other day was, "I'm so glad to be here, now where's my fishing rod?"

Benny is survived by his brother, Henry Luhr of Carnduff; sister, Florence McLaren of Arcola; and sister-in-law, Ann Luhr of Estevan; as well as nieces and nephews: Rodney Luhr, Shelly Heselwood, Tammy Luhr; Daphne Morris, Lyle McLaren and Earl McLaren and their families.

He was predeceased by his parents, August and Lydia Luhr; brother, Raymond Luhr; sister-in-law, Barbara Luhr; brother-in-law, Bob McLaren and nephew, Ivan McLaren.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."  2 Timothy 4:7
