Bridget "Bridie" Sawyer Obituary

Bridget "Bridie" Sawyer of Carnduff, SK. passed away peacefully at the Sunset Haven Nursing Home on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at the age of 101 years.

Bridie was born in Donegal, Ireland, on September 21, 1920, to Owen and Anne McBride. She was one of eight children. At age 17 she moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, and worked as a nurse’s aide.

She met Mervyn, the handsome young Canadian soldier. After a few short meetings while he was on leave, he proposed and they married on May 4, 1945. The war ended, Mervyn went home to Canada, and in May 1946, Bridie came to Canada as a “War Bride”. They had their son Douglas (1947) and daughter Colleen (1951). Bridie worked as a nurse’s aide at Borderline Housing from 1963-1985 when she retired.

Her hobbies included gardening and golf. She grew beautiful gardens and flowers. She golfed until she was 93, and had a round with 4 generations (one of her fondest memories). Bridie was the most gifted knitter - making hundreds of hooded baby sweaters and beautiful Aran sweaters. This wasn’t a hobby - it was an art form.

She was an avid reader and loved her daily walks, especially with her little companion Ninja.

She was NEVER idle! A life well lived.

Bridie is survived by her son, Douglas (Linda) Sawyer of Cochrane, AB, grandson, Steven (Teresa) Sawyer (children, Parker and Kaelyn) and granddaughter, Sonia (Troy Schaab) (children, Nakita and Bryce); daughter, Colleen (Robert) Taylor of Carnduff, SK, granddaughter, Angela (Jason Sabados) (children, Hailey, Bryce and Branden) and granddaughter, Cara (Evan Zacharias) (children, Kaiden, Alaina and Briza); siblings, Mary Kinney, Una McBride and Jimmy McBride.

She was predeceased by her parents, Owen and Anne McBride; siblings, Sheila, Maurice, Hugh and Peggy; husband, Mervyn Sawyer; in-laws, Robert and Rhoda Sawyer, Harvey, Frank, Emerson, Lorne, Dorothy, Toots, Lois, Merle, Floyd and Vera.

A service to celebrate Bridie’s life was held at the C. E. Hall, St. Andrew’s United Church, Carnduff, SK on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Kathy Kyle officiating. Interment took place at the Carnduff Cemetery.
