I have so many great memories of Leone,. As many know she and I walked many miles together around Carnduff sharing our thoughts and stories with each other. I think Leone would agree that getting caught in a sudden downpour and trying to take shelter by the grain elevator was a memorable moment. Someone saw us and motioned us to their house where we were given proper shelter and towels to dry off.
Over the years we shared meals with Bud & Leone and eventually tracked them down in Florida one winter. Leone also came along on an Alaskan cruise and during this cruise her first great granddaughter, Teanna, was born..
Much sympathy goes out to all of Leone's family.

Pink petunias, row upon row, were mom’s favourite flower choice for planters on the farm and she always had a large vegetable garden out behind the house and, in later years, a fish pond out front. There is nothing like the taste of fresh peas picked from the pod while standing amid the fertile growth inspired by a green thumb! And who could forget shopping from the Sears catalogue, which is now only a memory. Mom wrote in a diary every day. When we were kids, she sewed outfits for us to wear when playing music and also whipped up old fashioned dresses and outfits to wear to car shows and parades. We had a dog Penny and then a second Toy Terrier, Peppy. In the book, “With Unfailing Dedication – Rural Teachers in the War Years” there is a chapter about mom’s sister, Muriel, teaching in northern Saskatchewan when mom was young and living with her. Aunt Muriel, Aunt Helen and Aunt Edith lived in Ontario but always kept in touch and there were many visits back and forth.
The cottage at Carlyle Lake was always abuzz with visitors, family and friends. There was mom in the kitchen flipping endless stacks of pancakes and brewing pot after pot of coffee perked in the, now vintage, glass stove top percolator. Frank and Myra had a cottage next door and so there was frequently music and often additions to the band when the walls swelled to capacity. Mom and Dad liked to fish, as I recall for perch and jackfish, and tour around the lake in the boat to other beaches and suntan on Sandy Beach where the boat house was. Aunt Edith’s daughter, Lynn, remembers mom taking her to indoor roller skating at Kenosee, when she visited as a teenager.
When they moved to the “house that Frank built” in Carnduff mom could be found, in the summer, in her tidy and manicured oasis in the back yard. There was always homemade soup bubbling on the stove and delicious desserts baking in the oven. And I am pretty sure Dad had a secret stash of his favourite cookies that he couldn’t bring himself to share. Mom won prizes in photo competitions, went to the Orient, United Kingdom and Europe with Aunt Muriel and they went hiking at Lake Louise. She had fun cruising around town in her multi-colored Triumph convertible and so had her own wheels for parades, as well.
In Florida she rode her bike and/or walked every day, just like she did at home. A good day in retirement was shopping in nearby Bealls or scoring a deal in Dillards buying a new sequined outfit for their next cruise. She did enjoy dressing up on board. They made regular visits to the Auburndale Flea Market for bargains and often drove to Lake Alfred for a relaxing lunch at the quaint Lavender N Lace Tea Room. Other favourite dining stops were at Cracker Barrel and for her favourite chocolate ice cream at Baskin Robbins. Mom, especially, liked to go to nearby Cypress Gardens to listen to music, to YeeHaw Junction Bluegrass Festival and the Strawberry Festival at Plant City, where mom and I enjoyed Brad Paisley’s performance when he was a newbie. They had friends in Florida that returned year after year like they did. Mom liked to sun tan in Hawaii and one of their favourite road trips was to go to the North Shore for the buffet at the Turtle Bay Resort. They also travelled to tropical locations with the Simpsons, Rutledges and Camerons and with Dad’s sister, Edith, and Uncle Henry. We made many summer trips to see Mom’s late brother Bill’s wife, Aunt Barb and sons in Calgary and we had fun visiting Banff with them and catching up. Uncle Bill was a Flight Lieutenant at RCAF Station Greenwood N.S. when he passed in 1960 and his service was conducted with full military honors.
Mom and Dad rode on mules at the Grand Canyon, fished in the ocean off Hawaii, toured Vancouver Island up to Tofino then drove down the Oregon Coast, crawled on their hands and knees through red rock passages and climbed ladders to see ancient Anasazi and Pueblo Indian ruins, careened through alligator infested swamps on an airboat in Alligator Alley and flew Wardair many times in memorable days of large roomy seats, the dessert cart, flower leis and service second to none. Now mom and dad are off on another adventure where there are no hospitals, illness or pain.
"They must be marvelling at all they are seeing
The wonders around them now
Bursting to share the secrets of the universe
But they just can’t figure out how. "(written by Cheryl)

First, Cheryl let me say I am sorry for your Mothers passing but know you could not wish her back. I had a little visit with her when we got back from Arizona this spring, she did know me and asked after Pete. I could not reply to your message. I remember so much of the things you said about your Mom, the lake, the music and the food.. Remember the dine and dances we all went to? Did you know your mother put my daughters bridal shower on? Good memories all! Take care.
