Douglas Southam Obituary

Douglas Southam

April 14, 1928 - November 19, 2025

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025 Douglas Southam passed away peacefully at the age of 97. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Isabelle. Remembering Doug forever in their hearts are his children Gregory (Jennifer), Tracy and Sandra (Doug); granddaughter Molly, step-granddaughters Alissa (Steve), Shawna and Robin (Andrew) and seven step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Ruth (Bill), brother Stewart, brother-in-law John MacLeod and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doug was predeceased by his mother and father, Mollie and Hiram Southam; his sister Aileen; and his brothers David and Gordon; his sisters-in-law, Doris and Karen and nephew Christen.

He was born on a farm in Pierson, Manitoba where he attended school prior to entering the University of Manitoba. He completed a degree in Agriculture and later a degree in Education. His career besides farming included fieldwork with a group of Co-ops, then teaching Vocational Agriculture in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and finally with Manitoba Department of Agriculture as an Agricultural Representative in Melita, Manitoba.

Most important to him was supporting his children in their activities. He was very proud of their accomplishments and always welcomed their friends. He had been involved in sports and was golfing at age 95. He was in several choirs over the years, most notably Barbershop groups. Recently Doug and Isabelle were active in the Edmonton area Friendship Force Group which involved both travel and hosting friends from many countries. He travelled to many countries and was keenly interested in the welfare of people around the world. Travels included Africa, India, China, Japan, Europe and South America. He maintained contact with a family from Zimbabwe who he met while on a work project there.

Doug was a man of strong faith. Most recently he regularly met on Zoom for a church service with friends from the church he attended in California during the 26 winters he spent there.

Doug and Isabelle moved from Melita to Devon, AB in 1999 and then to Leduc, AB in October of 2024.

The family would like to thank Lifestyle Options staff, AHS care workers and the compassionate Doctors and nurses and staff at the Leduc Hospital for making Doug’s last days as comfortable as possible.

As per Doug’s wishes there will be no funeral service at this time but a public graveside service will be held in the spring at the Pierson Cemetery in Manitoba. Date and time will be announced on this site.
