Edith (McLean) Veitch

Our dear mother Edith (McLean) Veitch, aged 96, passed away peacefully at Sunset Haven Personal Care Home, Carnduff, SK. on Thursday, December 24, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

Edith was born January 16, 1924, on the family farm in the Douglaston district north of Alameda to Stuart and Pearl McLean. Upon completion of Grade 12, Edith attended Normal school (Teacher's College) in Regina. She taught school at Douglaston school district from 1942-1948, then at Glen Ewen in 1968 and 69. Edith married Jim Veitch of Glen Ewen in July 1948, and together they farmed in the Glen Ewen district, raising cattle and growing crops. Edith always had a large garden and canned much produce and took great care of her flowers and yard.

Edith was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1953, well over 50 years, holding offices of Worthy Matron three times, Grand Warder, Grand Representative to Connecticut, USA, District Deputy. Edith was also a dedicated UCW member, both at Glen Ewen and Carnduff since 1948. She served as Secretary at Glen Ewen UCW for 25 years.

Edith loved animals, especially cats, dogs and horses. Her love of horses began early as she rode to and from school. 

Edith was a lover of art, painting well over 200 pictures in oil and watercolours.

Edith was an accomplished seamstress, sewing many graduation and wedding dresses, and men's clothing as well as her own. Her hands were never idle; she made many quilts of which all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were recipients. She also did ceramics, embroidery, crochet, knitting and rug hooking.

Music was a big part of Edith's life, and she had enjoyment playing the organ, and piano up until her last year. She attended concerts and recitals, and could always be found at the Music Festival, enjoying her great-granddaughters' piano selections. She sang with the Silvertones group and the church choir for many years, and enjoyed attending the Friendship Center in Carnduff. Her love of dancing started at a young age, and she danced right up to her 94th year.

Edith enjoyed sports of all kinds, and liked to talk about the races she won as a schoolgirl. She loved to watch Lily and Meredith's water polo matches, ball games and ringette matches. 

Edith had a love of travel. She and Jim travelled in their camper many times to Mouse River Park, Minot Fair and Hostfest, and spent many winters in Arizona and Texas. They also travelled to Florida, Hawaii, and Las Vegas. Later, Edith and Cheryl travelled to Victoria, BC, Branson, Australia, New Zealand, Dominican Republic, Alaska and the Maritimes.

Poetry was another of Edith's loves and she could still recite selections, by memory, when she was 96!  And if your grammar wasn't correct, she would correct that too!

Most of all, Edith loved and was so very proud of her family and all of their accomplishments.

Left with fond memories of a life well lived are her children; son: Grant (Deb) Veitch, granddaughter Tara (Steve), their children Ali and Tommy, grandson Clint (Barb), children Nora and Reid; son: Lorne (Rhonda) Veitch, grandsons Lindell (Daniella) Veitch, their son Liam; Keelan (Nancy) Veitch, their daughters Zoe and Daphne; daughter: Cheryl (Reg) Faber, granddaughter Michelle (Cory), their children Mercedes, Peyton and Paris, and granddaughter Erin (Chad) and their children Rachel, Lily, and Meredith; also 4 step-granddaughters and their families and several nieces and nephews.

Edith was predeceased by Jim (1997), husband of 49 years, parents Stuart and Pearl McLean, brothers Donald (Esme), Jack (Donna), sisters-in-law Mabel (Tom) Hanley, Marg (Jack) Somerville, Agnes (Gordon) Chipperfield, Jim's brother Tom (Bernice) Veitch, nephew Randy Chipperfield.

Due to public health restrictions, a private family funeral service was held at St. Andrew’s United Church, Carnduff, SK. on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 with Rev. Susan Reed officiating. The interment followed at the Glen Ewen Cemetery, Glen Ewen, Saskatchewan.
