Edna Catherine (Johnson) Olive

August 27, 1920 ~ July 18, 2020 (age 99) 99 Years Old

Edna Catherine Olive of Indian Head passed away peacefully at the Wolseley Long Term Care Home on July 18, 2020 at the age of 99 years, five weeks short of 100 years.

Edna was predeceased by her husband Will Olive, her parents Tom and Mary Johnson, sisters Myrtle Moore and Marion Scott, brother George Johnson, step-sons Harold Olive and Alfred Olive, and step-daughter Ethel McMain.  Edna is survived by sister-in-law Betty Johnson, three generations of nieces and nephews and numerous step-grandchildren.

Edna was born at Carlyle, Saskatchewan on August 27, 1920 in the home of her maternal grandparents and grew up on the Johnson family farm at Oxbow, Saskatchewan. She completed grade school education at Orangedale country school and Oxbow High School and went on to Normal School in Regina before accepting teaching assignments at a variety of schools, one of which led to her meeting Will Olive whom she married in 1955.  After her husband’s death in 1966, Edna spent a number of years in Wolseley and Oxbow, but most of the remainder of her life she lived at Indian Head where she worked as a book-keeper and librarian and was active in numerous community activities.  These included the United Church and also the Senior Heritage Club where she always looked forward to quilting and a good game of cribbage.  Edna also loved to knit and many a newborn in her extended family benefited from a beautiful piece of her handwork.  Edna very much enjoyed visits with her relatives and friends and enjoyed traveling the province with special aunt, Lizzie Morrison, of Carlyle.  A highlight of her travel history was a trip to Israel with her sister Myrtle Moore.   Throughout the years of her life, Edna was dedicated to caring for others where care was needed.  This included all members of her family, including her parents and especially her mother who lived to be 103 years old.

Edna’s family want to thank the staff of Hayes Haven at Indian Head for the care they provided to Edna the last number of years.  Thanks also to the Indian Head Hospital staff for care provided on numerous occasions (Edna had a few crash landings which required body repair!).  And finally thank you to the staff at Lakeside Care Home in Wolseley for taking care of Edna in recent weeks.

A private graveside service will be held at Oxbow, Saskatchewan with Rev. Kathy Kyle officiating.  Donations in memory of Edna may be made to St. Andrew’s United Church, Box 354, Indian Head, SK S0G 2K0.
