Louise Vass Obituary

Mrs. Louise Evelyn Vass (nee: Thompson) passed away at the Sunset Haven, Carnduff on Monday, January 13, 2025 at the age of 97.

Louise was born July 14, 1927, to Willie and Lena Thompson.  She grew up in the Wheatland district, attending Wheatland Church services and across the road to Wheatland school for her education (grade 8) and into Carnduff for high school.  She continued living the farm life when she met and married William (Bill) Vass, December 10, 1952.  She was a mother of three: Vernon, Miles and Cathie.

Louise loved to cook, sew, knit, and work leather, among other interests.  She was a Sunday school teacher, a church-going God-fearing woman, and a UCW member for many years.  She was a recipe hound.  Any cookbook for miles she had, and in all of them are side notes and similar recipes written in the margins.  She canned, cooked, baked, and kept the house at the farm.  She was known for her puffed wheat cake and many more favourite recipes.  Louise hosted many family gatherings over many years.

Louise was a devoted grandma to grandsons Chris and Corey, with many trips to Regina to help out and many vacations with them at the farm.  There are fond memories of baking and cooking with Chris always helping.  She enjoyed watching them grow up.

After living 85 years in the country, Louise moved into Carnduff to Sunset Haven.  She always appreciated the care she received there.  She was genuinely concerned for the residents and workers (kitchen, housekeeping, nurses, aides, maintenance, and administration).  She loved Bingo and hair dressing day, She attended church, teas, and enjoyed entertainment.  She always wanted a list of the high school graduating class so she could send a card and gift to anyone she knew.  Louise had a giving and kind spirit.  Over the years she donated to many charities, feeling she could help out.

Louise was predeceased by her father, Willie; mother, Lena; husband, Bill; brother, John (Jean), brother, Cliff (Barbara); sister, Carol; sisters-in-law and their husbands; brothers-in-law and their wives.

Left to mourn are children, Vernon (Irene), Miles (Shelly), and Cathie; grandsons, Chris (Jaclyn), Corey (Courtney, son Bronx); great-granddaughter, Ayla; Rodney Gies; many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A funeral service to celebrate Louise’s life was held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. from the St. Andrew’s United Church, Carnduff, SK., with Reverend Kathy Kyle officiating. Interment followed at the Carnduff Cemetery.

Donations may be given to the Border-Line Housing “New Kitchen Fund” Box 250, Carnduff, SK. S0C 0S0.
