Murray Green Obituary

Murray passed away at the Deloraine Health Centre on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the age of 85.

He attended Napinka school and left home at the age of 18 to join the Navy. During WWll he served as a radio and radar technician on board the HMCS Wallaceburg while on convoy duty in the North Atlantic.

When he returned home he joined his dad in the family business, Green''s Garage, working as a self taught mechanic having grown up around the business. During the winter months he attended Manitoba Technical Institute where he studied electrical wiring. Following this he spent a couple of years wiring several farms in the area during the rural electrification.

In 1956 he married Elsie Palmer of Waskada and together raised two children, Kim and David. He was well known in the community for always lending a helping hand when needed. But Sundays were family day and many Sunday evenings were spent taking family drives where he would tell stories of his wiring days, such as where he had the best meals and where he had trouble getting into the attic.

He enjoyed his time serving his community as a fireman for 34 years and an ambulance driver for 27 years, among other services. He was honoured to receive the Governor General''s Caring Canadian award in 2006.

Murray was a life long learner and educator, he loved to figure out how things worked and enjoyed talking to people and was always interested in what they were doing. His interests were varied and included hunting, fishing, traveling, antiques and he was well know for his photography. He took wedding pictures for many families in the area.

His children always found him a wealth of knowledge and a great help with school projects. One question on how something worked could easily lead to an hour long lesson complete with diagrams and demonstrations.

His latest interest was in computers. He struggled with this and was often frustrated, and never feeling he got the full grasp of the topic, but he enjoyed playing solitaire.

He continued studying with St. John''s Ambulance as a First Responder into his seventies, and read any and all books, magazines and newspapers.

He took great pride in his children and grand children, he was especially thrilled to have recently become a great grandpa and see one of his grandson''s married.

He was predeceased by his parents Ernest & Mary (Ballard) Green; 3 brothers-in-law Donald Gerrie, John Palmer & Les Way. Murray is survived by his wife Elsie of Napinka; daughter Kim (Randy) Hanstead of Kenora, ON. and grandson Joey (Diana) of Winnipeg; son Dave (Deb) of Napinka and grandson Brett (Amber) and great grandson Cole all of Redvers; sister Edith Gerrie of Winnipeg; 2 sisters-in-law Ellen Way of Winnipeg & Pauline Palmer of Waskada; brother-in-law Bill (Dorothy) Palmer of Souris; also numerous nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Murray''s life was held at the Napinka cemetery on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 2:00pm. Reverend Mark Satterly officiated.

Donations may be given to the Canadian Diabetes Association 727B 10th Street Brandon, MB. R7A 4G7, Heart & Stroke Foundation 824 18th Street Unit 3 Brandon, MB. R7A 5B7 or to the charity of your choice.
