Obituary

Walter Kurtz

1927-2022

Walter passed away peacefully at the Melita Personal Care Home on Saturday, February 12, 2022, twelve days after his 95th birthday.  Walter was born January 30, 1927, in the Stanley municipality; the second child in a family of nine born to Fred and Margaret Kurtz.  As his father was a Brickmason and worked away from home; Walter, at an early age accepted the responsibility of managing the farm and helping his mother with the raising of his younger siblings.  In 1947 the family moved to the Coulter district where Walter found his passion in farming.  It was a difficult beginning for him as he had to start with nothing but optimism.  Walter started out with both grain and cattle, but in 1984 he sold his cattle and continued to grain farm.  Walter was very proud of his Canadian Wheat Board permit books which were first issued to him in 1944/45. At that time he farmed 240 acres. 65 books later, Walter had increased his farm to 1120 acres.  He enjoyed taking his visitors to tour the farm while pointing out the crops in each field.

Walter was an avid hunter. He looked forward to hunting season, where hunters would gather and enjoy hunting deer in the area.  He made memorable trips to Montana to hunt pheasants and antelope and to the cabin in McCreary for moose and elk.  He travelled many times to The Pas with his good friend Lawrence to fish.  Whether it was fishing on the lake or ice fishing, Walter always came home with a fish story.

Walter grew great crops and had a green thumb for gardening.  He grew bountiful garden vegetables, maintained a lovely peony patch, grew the most amazing Amaryllis’s and the biggest Dieffenbachia plants.

Walter’s travels took him to Lahr, Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, and Mexico.

There have been many family gatherings at the farm over the past years with wonderful memories made.  Enjoying these memories are brothers Danny, Elmer (Armande), sister Frieda (Marcel) Arsenault, sister-in law Marilyn Kurtz, brother-in-law Fred Robinson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by brothers Wilfred (Helen), Arthur, sisters Lil Mee (Clayton), Ruth Robinson, Emily (Ivan) Arsenault, sisters-in-law Delores and Helen Kurtz.

A service to celebrate Walter's life was held at the Victoria United Church, Melita, on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with (rev.) Heather Sandilands officiating. Interment to follow at the Coultervale Cemetery.

Donations may be given to the Coultervale Cemetery Fund, c/o Donna Brown, Box 610, Melita, MB. R0M 1L0 or a charity of one's choice.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hammell and the staff from Melita Home Care, Melita Hospital and the Melita Personal Care Home for the care and compassion they have shown Walter over the past years.
