Herbert George Gall

Mr. Herb Gall of Oxbow passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at the age of 91.

Herb will be forever loved and missed by his wife of 57 years, Jean (Ludtke) Gall; four children, Grant (Carol) Gall, Suzanne (Doug) Hannah, Grace (Brent) Morrow, and Sherry (Don) Hansen; grandchildren: Rachel and Charlotte Gall, Mirinda and Meghan Hannah, Emily, Jill and Evan Morrow, and Julia and Noah Hansen; sister, Lila Meyer. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law, Yula Gall, Selma Gall and Marvel Gall.

He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Alvina (Orlowski) Gall; siblings, Evald Gall, Elsie (Gus) Neumann, Emil Gall, Edwin Gall, Helene Sidaway, Fred (Elsie) Gall, Edward Gall; brother-in-law, Robert Meyer; son-in-law, Darren Mohrbutter.

The funeral service for Herb was held at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Oxbow, SK. on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Todd Guggenmos officiating. Interment followed at the Oxbow Cemetery.

Herb's Obituary

Herbert Gall (fondly known as Herbie by many close to him) was born in Steelman, Saskatchewan on December 8, 1929.  His parents were Frederick and Alvina Gall, who had immigrated from Russia two years earlier, like many German families sponsored by the Lutheran church during this time. 

He attended the Steelman school, a one room school house that was taught by his to be sister-in-law Yula in his later grades.  It was a tough childhood growing up in the Depression and Dirty 30’s.  His father Frederick passed away when he was 10, which made it even harder.  He spent many summers with his brother Fred working on Gus and Elsie Neumann’s farm (brother-in-law and sister), which he absolutely loved.  He completed some of his high school by correspondence and then landed a job on the railroad.  He then took a job as a grain buyer/elevator agent for Serle Grain Company.  This took him to many places, such as Beaubier,  Arborg, Manitoba, Northgate/Openshaw, Arborfield, and finally Big Beaver.  He was justifiably proud of taking Serle from the smallest elevator to the largest in Big Beaver through hard work and excellent service to the farming community. 

It was at this time that significant oil discoveries were made at Steelman and Frobisher and Herb joined Producers Pipelines in 1956 (subsequently acquired by Dome Petroleum).  He worked at the Steelman terminal and in the control center in Estevan.  It was during this time that Herb started building houses in Estevan, both as investments and for rental income.

After a few years working in Estevan, Herb met Jean Ludtke at his brother Fred’s wedding.  They married on May 16, 1964 and had four children, Grant and Suzanne (twins), Grace, and Sherry. 

While he enjoyed his work, he realized his childhood dream of buying Gus and Elsie’s farm and moved there in the spring of 1973.  Herb gradually expanded his farm over the years, buying more land in Willmar, Frobisher, and Alameda areas.  He retired from Producer’s Pipeline in 1989 to focus solely on farming.

Herb and Jean moved into a new house in Oxbow in 2002 as part of a “phased” retirement.  He would have preferred to keep farming until his last day if his health would have allowed it.  There was nothing he enjoyed more – being on the farm!

While he did struggle with his health the last couple of years, he was very grateful to be well enough to remain at home.  Herb passed away in his sleep on August 10th.

Herb was predeceased by his siblings: Evald Gall, Elsie (Gus) Neumann, Emil Gall, Edwin Gall, Helena Sidaway, and Fred (Elsie) Gall, brother-in-law Robert Meyers, and Edward Gall.
